SCGP Q3 2026: Indonesia Turns a Profit — Thai Stock Case File #1

SCG Packaging (SCGP, SET50), Q3 2026: from 2022 to 2024 the company itself named Indonesia as the market with the heaviest packaging-paper price pressure; this quarter it credits Indonesia for its year-on-year profit growth. We read six MD&As, the Opportunity Day deck and the goodwill note to see how far the documents confirm that turnaround — and what they still do not say. Written 3 November 2026 from documents as of that date. No price target.

Written 3 November 2026 · Thai Stock Case File #1 · case TH-2026-W45-A · based on the company's filings and the Opportunity Day recording as of that date

SCG Packaging (SCGP), one of the 50 large caps in Thailand's SET50 index, Q3 2026: the market the company itself described for three years as its worst price battlefield — Indonesia — is now the reason it gives for profit growth. How far do the documents actually confirm that turn?

SCGP · FY2026 Q3: "YoY profitability increased, mainly reflecting sustained improvement in packaging paper operations in Indonesia, while margins benefited from continued cost-saving efforts."

— MD&A Q3 2026, page 3 · original filing (SEC)

This is a case file, not a stock pick. Every number below comes from a document you can open, with the page or the minute. Where the documents stop, I say so.

The short version

  • The turn is real on paper. The Indonesian packaging paper business went from losses to a profit in Q2 and Q3 2026, with EBITDA positive for three straight quarters (Opportunity Day deck, slide 14).
  • It was price and cost, not volume. Q3 volume was lower than Q2, yet profit rose. The slide, management on the call and the MD&A all say the same thing.
  • What is still unknown: whether it lasts, when the idled PM1 machine comes back, and a 10,832 million baht goodwill balance that the notes size but do not judge.

The question

From 2022 to 2024 SCGP wrote, in its own management discussion and analysis, that Indonesia was where packaging paper prices were hit hardest. In 2026 it writes that Indonesia is why profit is up. Is that reversal something the documents can confirm, or just a sentence?

Why now: SCGP released its Q3 2026 MD&A on 27 October 2026 and presented at the Stock Exchange of Thailand's Opportunity Day — the quarterly session where management takes questions from analysts on the record — on 28 October 2026.

What this file covers, stated up front:

  • Six SCGP MD&As (Q4 2022, Q4 2023, Q4 2024, Q1 2026, Q2 2026, Q3 2026), in English, as filed.
  • The Form 56-1 One Reports for FY2023–FY2025 and the FY2025 financial-statement note on goodwill.
  • The Q3 2026 Opportunity Day deck and recording. Spoken words are an AI transcript; I only use them where the deck or the MD&A says the same thing.
  • It does not cover share price, valuation or any forecast. There is none in the documents and there is none here.

Three quarters of revenue comes from integrated packaging. The Indonesian subsidiary, Fajar, is the packaging paper business this file is about; the FY2024 One Report notes that "the profit for the year included the impact from additional stake in Indonesia operation since September 2024".

Finding 1 — Q3 2026 in numbers, and what the auditor looked at

From the Q3 2026 MD&A, page 3:

ItemQ3 2026Change
Revenue from sales32,577 million baht+7% YoY · flat QoQ
EBITDA5,357 million baht+29% YoY · −8% QoQ
Profit for the period2,026 million baht+113% YoY · −12% QoQ
9 months: EBITDA / profit15,819 / 5,896 million baht+25% / +106% YoY

Two things to hold at once: profit more than doubled versus a year ago, and it fell 12% versus the previous quarter. "Growth" here is a year-on-year statement.

The Terminal's full scan of SCGP's filings found no red flag in the auditor's reports. It lists eight key audit matters across FY2022–FY2025. A key audit matter (KAM) is an area where the auditor applied significant judgement; it appears in clean reports too, and the Terminal labels it as such. One of the FY2025 KAMs is the impairment test of goodwill from overseas acquisitions — which leads straight to Indonesia.

Model-validation habit: before believing a turnaround story, find the balance sheet item that would break if the story were wrong. Here it is goodwill on the Indonesian unit. That is where we end up in the "still unknown" section.

Finding 2 — How SCGP wrote about Indonesia, 2022 to 2026

Read one MD&A and you see a quarter. Read the same theme across years and you see the company change its own story. This is the core of the case.

SCGP · FY2022 Q4: "The key drops in prices were from Indonesia & Vietnam packaging paper markets with high level of excess supply from lower export volume throughout H2/2022"

— MD&A Q4 2022, page 2 · original filing (SEC)

SCGP · FY2023 Q4: "Stiff competition and excess supply led to persistent product price pressure, particularly in Indonesia's packaging paper industry"

— MD&A Q4 2023, page 2 · the same sentence appears in One Report FY2023, printed p.98 · original filing (SEC)

SCGP · FY2024 Q4: "The industry also faced intense pressure from regional prices, particularly in Indonesia, where packaging paper prices were driven down"

— MD&A Q4 2024, page 2 · also One Report FY2024, printed p.95 · original filing (SEC)

Then, in 2026, the same company, the same market:

SCGP · FY2026 Q1: "YoY and QoQ, profitability enhanced by improved performance of packaging paper operation in Indonesia, disciplined cost management in energy mix, and productivity improvement"

— MD&A Q1 2026, page 3 · original filing (SEC)

SCGP · FY2026 Q2: "…YoY, EBITDA and profit for the period increased by 36% and 119%, respectively, attributed to the turnaround of packaging paper operation in Indonesia"

— MD&A Q2 2026, page 6 · original filing (SEC)

Three years of "pressure, particularly in Indonesia", then three quarters of "improvement in Indonesia", ending with the Q3 2026 sentence at the top of this page. The company's own vocabulary moved from excess supply to turnaround to sustained improvement.

A sentence is not proof. So the next step is to find numbers for Indonesia on its own.

Finding 3 — The Opportunity Day deck vs management's words vs the MD&A

SCGP's Q3 2026 Opportunity Day deck has a page on the Indonesian packaging paper business alone. Slide 14, in billions of Indonesian rupiah (the slide prints Thai Buddhist-era years; converted here):

QuarterRevenueEBITDAProfit (loss)Volume ('000 t)
Q3 20251,9072(240)316
Q4 20252,177(37)(404)367
Q1 20261,953166(19)300
Q2 20262,399290107337
Q3 20262,499330143326

— SET Opportunity Day Q3 2026 (28 October 2026), slide 14

Read the last two rows: profit up, volume down. The slide's first bullet (in Thai; our translation) says performance improved on pricing aligned with the regional market and continued cost efficiency, while domestic volume fell because some products were deliberately cut.

Management said the same thing on the call. These are from the AI transcript, so I give the meaning rather than quote word for word:

  • Minute 11:20 — EBITDA up 29% year on year, the main factor being the recovery of the Indonesian packaging paper business.
  • Minute 15:00 — production and sales of unprofitable grades were reduced; the PM1 paper machine was stopped, not permanently, to be converted to duplex board. Part of the volume drop comes from this.
  • Minute 15:38 — Indonesia is now EBITDA- and profit-positive; EBITDA margin went from 12% to 13%.

Three sources, one story: price aligned with the region, cost control, and choosing to sell only what makes money. None of the three claims the recovery came from selling more paper.

Comparing in the same search: who else talks about this?

Run the same query — "packaging paper price pressure in Indonesia" — across the whole indexed market in the Terminal and SCGP dominates: 18 mentions, against 3 for STP and 2 each for UTP and MATI, with SCGP's 18 spread across 2022–2026. That is not a ranking of companies, and I have not read the other companies' passages as part of this file. What it does tell you is that, in Thai filings, this theme is overwhelmingly SCGP's own story. A sentence repeated by the company is not independent evidence, so the confirmation has to come from SCGP's own segment numbers — which is why slide 14 matters.

What the documents say / what they do not

The documents say:

  1. The Indonesian packaging paper unit turned from losses to profit for two consecutive quarters (Q2–Q3 2026), with EBITDA positive for three.
  2. SCGP itself attributes its year-on-year profit growth to Indonesia, in three consecutive MD&As.
  3. The deck, management's words and the MD&A point the same way: price and cost, not volume.

The documents do not say:

  1. Whether it lasts. Management said only that Q4 demand and volume should be "close to Q3" (minute 27:03, AI transcript). There is no forecast in any document.
  2. Quarter on quarter it fell. Group profit dropped 12% from Q2 to Q3 2026. The growth is a comparison with a weak year-ago quarter.
  3. When PM1 restarts, and at what cost. Not in any document.
  4. What the goodwill means. Note 13 of the FY2025 financial statements:

SCGP · FY2025: "…two subsidiaries in Indonesia and Netherlands, which have the goodwill of Baht 10,832 million and Baht 1,260 million, respectively, and the recoverable amount exceeding the carrying amount by approximately Baht 18,909 million and Baht 1,279 million, respectively. If the key assumptions, such as the projected revenue growth rates decrease by 7.86% and 5.77% or terminal values growth rates decrease by 1.55% and 1.16%, the recoverable amount will be equal to the carrying amount."

— FY2025 financial statements, Note 13, printed p.289 · in the FY2025 Form 56-1 One Report (SEC, ZIP)

The note gives the headroom — how far assumptions would have to fall before the books and the recoverable value meet. It does not say impairment is coming. A year earlier the Indonesian goodwill was 12,120 million baht with headroom of 15,955 million baht (FY2024 statements, file p.280 of the FY2024 One Report). The headroom widened.

  1. Full-year 2026. There are no annual statements yet, and FY2025 core profit was still down 4%.

Where to look next: the Q4 2026 MD&A, the FY2026 One Report and its goodwill note, and the next Opportunity Day.

The answer

How far do the documents confirm the Indonesian turnaround? They confirm that it happened and how it happened — two quarters of profit, driven by price and cost rather than volume, with the company, the deck and management in agreement. They do not confirm that it will last. That answer sits in documents that do not exist yet.

Run it yourself in the Terminal

  3. Sort the results by period and read 2022 → 2026 in order — that is Finding 2.
  4. Click any result to open the original PDF with the sentence highlighted, and check the page yourself.
  5. Search management's words from Opportunity Day and use "Open the recording at that minute" to hear the passage.

Traps in reading this set of documents

  • A hit is not the sentence you need. While building this file, a percentage that looked like it described Indonesia turned out, on the full page, to describe another part of the business. Always read the whole paragraph the hit sits in before you quote it.
  • The PDF viewer's label can be wrong. In the Terminal the Q3 2026 MD&A opens under a "Form 56-1 One Report" label. The file is the MD&A; cite it as such. (Logged as a bug.)
  • Not found in search ≠ not in the index. The index keeps selected highlights from each Opportunity Day; the PM1 passage at minute 15:00 was not selected, so you have to hear it in the recording itself.
  • Buddhist-era years. The Thai deck prints 2568/2569. Convert before comparing with English filings.

Frequently asked

What did SCGP say drove its Q3 2026 profit growth?+

In its Q3 2026 MD&A (page 3) SCG Packaging wrote that year-on-year profitability increased mainly because of sustained improvement in its packaging paper operations in Indonesia, with margins also helped by continued cost-saving.

Did SCGP's Indonesian packaging paper business return to profit in 2026?+

According to slide 14 of SCGP's Q3 2026 Opportunity Day deck, the Indonesian packaging paper operation posted a profit in Q2 2026 (107 billion rupiah) and Q3 2026 (143 billion rupiah), after losses in the three quarters before, and positive EBITDA for three quarters in a row.

Was the Indonesian turnaround driven by higher sales volume?+

No. On the same slide, volume in Q3 2026 was lower than in Q2 2026 (326 versus 337 thousand tonnes) while profit rose. The slide and management attribute the improvement to pricing aligned with the regional market and cost efficiency, plus deliberately cutting unprofitable grades.

How large is SCGP's goodwill on its Indonesian subsidiary, and is it impaired?+

Note 13 of the FY2025 financial statements puts the Indonesian goodwill at 10,832 million baht, with the recoverable amount exceeding the carrying amount by about 18,909 million baht. The note gives the headroom; it does not say the goodwill will be impaired.

What do SCGP's documents not yet tell investors about Indonesia?+

Whether the turnaround lasts beyond the next quarter, when the idled PM1 paper machine restarts and at what cost, and how full-year 2026 looks — there are no forecasts in the documents and no full-year 2026 statements yet.
