Step by step — build the structure, read the breakevens, and see the maximum loss in real baht. Risk first.

How to read a SET50 options payoff chart

A payoff chart answers exactly one question: if SET50 settles at a given level on expiry, what do you make or lose? Three things are enough to read it.

  • Horizontal axis (X) = where SET50 settles at expiry.
  • Vertical axis (Y) = net profit or loss in baht, after the premium. The line at Y = 0 is breakeven: above it you are in profit, below it you are in loss.
  • Breakeven is where the payoff line crosses Y = 0. Maximum loss is the flat floor at the bottom of the chart — and if the line keeps falling without flattening, the loss is unlimited. The tool computes both in the summary panel.

The habit from model risk: read the loss floor first, then look at the upside.

Options vocabulary

Call option
The right to BUY the index at the strike — usually taken when you expect SET50 to rise
Put option
The right to SELL the index at the strike — taken when you expect SET50 to fall, or to hedge a book
Strike price
The index level the option references — the point where the payoff line bends on the chart
Premium
What you pay or receive per contract — buyers pay it out, sellers take it in. Multiply by ฿200 per point for real baht

Frequently asked

How do I read a SET50 options payoff line — what are the X and Y axes?+

The horizontal axis (X) is where SET50 settles at expiry. The vertical axis (Y) is net profit or loss in baht, after the premium you paid. The horizontal line at Y = 0 is breakeven: above it you are in profit, below it you are in loss.

Where is the breakeven on the chart?+

Breakeven is exactly where the payoff line crosses Y = 0 — the index level at which you neither make nor lose. The tool computes it for you in the summary panel. Some structures have two breakevens, one on each side.

Where do I read the maximum loss?+

Look for the flat floor of the chart — the level where the line stops falling and runs horizontal. That is your maximum loss. If either side keeps falling without flattening, the loss is unlimited. A risk practitioner reads this number before the profit number, every time, and the tool prints it in the summary panel.

What is the difference between a call and a put?+

A call is the right to buy the index at the strike, usually taken when you expect SET50 to rise. A put is the right to sell, taken when you expect it to fall or want to hedge. In this tool you can go long or short either one, and combine them into a structure.

What is the ฿200 per point multiplier?+

SET50 options on TFEX carry a multiplier of 200 baht per index point, so the tool converts profit and loss into real baht automatically. A 5-point gain is 1,000 baht per contract.

Does this use live market prices?+

No. It computes the payoff at expiry from the premium you type in — for education and risk planning only. It does not pull live quotes. Check every number against your broker or TFEX before you trade.
